What is LCL shipping?
LCL — Less than Container Load — is ocean freight where multiple customers' cargo shares a single shipping container. Each shipper pays only for the cubic metres (CBM) or revenue tons their cargo uses, rather than the cost of an entire container.
LCL is functionally identical to shared container shipping and groupage shipping — the three terms describe the same service from different angles. LCL is the carrier and bill-of-lading term, groupage is the freight-forwarder term, and shared container is the customer-facing description. If you are not filling an entire container, LCL is the most economical option for routes such as Australia, Canada and the USA, where dedicated containers are otherwise prohibitively expensive for small consignments.
LCL vehicle shipping
Vehicles are one of the most common LCL cargo categories. Cars, motorcycles and small commercial vehicles ship inside the container — strapped, blocked and lashed alongside other LCL cargo. This is significantly cheaper than booking a sole-use container for a single vehicle and offers more protection than RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) because the cargo travels enclosed.
For multi-vehicle exports, our R-Rak vehicle shipping service uses racking systems to load up to four cars in a single 40ft container — the cheapest per-vehicle option on the market. Background reading: shared car shipping and shared motorcycle shipping.
How LCL is priced
LCL freight is quoted per W/M (weight or measure) — whichever is greater between 1 cubic metre and 1,000 kilograms. A 1.5 CBM consignment that weighs 900 kg is billed at 1.5 W/M; a 1 CBM consignment that weighs 1,200 kg is billed at 1.2 W/M. Most carriers apply a 1 W/M minimum charge.
Your total LCL cost includes ocean freight (W/M × lane rate), BAF/fuel surcharge (typically 8–10%), UK export documentation, terminal handling charges at both ends and optional marine cargo insurance. Lane rates vary from £55/CBM for European routes up to £200/CBM for Australasia. LCL to the Americas and Australasia
Long-haul lanes are where LCL really shines for small UK shippers. A full 40ft container to Australia costs £5,000–£7,000; the same cargo at 4 CBM ships LCL for around £750. Similar savings apply to New Zealand, Canada and the USA.
The USA requires ISF 10+2 filing 24 hours before sailing — included with every booking. Australia and New Zealand have strict biosecurity rules requiring quarantine declarations and treatment certificates for timber, soil and plant material. We handle these on your behalf.
LCL to Europe, Africa and the Middle East
Short-sea European LCL sails in 5–14 days from Southampton and Tilbury. Popular European LCL lanes include Cyprus, Malta, Spain, Italy and Greece.
African LCL is dominated by Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. Middle East LCL covers Dubai, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC. Asian LCL includes India, Pakistan and Hong Kong.
LCL vs FCL — which is cheaper?
The crossover point between LCL and FCL (Full Container Load) is around 13–15 W/M for short-sea routes and 18–22 W/M for long-haul. Below that, LCL is cheaper. Above that, FCL is cheaper per CBM and faster because there is no consolidation wait.
